Beres Hammond – Reggae Hot Shots

With every year that passes, we become a little bit older, a little more mature and a lot, lot wiser. Though, for Beres Hammond, each trip around the Sun seems to bring yet more musical talent, skill and mastery incomparable to no other. In celebration of his 62nd birthday this Monday, Jet Star has decided to honour the Reggae legend with a spot in our ‘Hot Shots’ series.

Juggling a solo career with his role as the lead singer in Zap Pow never seemed to affect Hammond as, during the late 70s and early 80s, he dominated the waves with a continuous string of hits.

However, it was perhaps during his time working under his own label, Harmony Records, when Hammond truly cemented his position as Reggae’s newest icon. Tracks like ‘Groovy Little Thing’ and ‘What One Dance Can Do’ were the chart successes needed to propel the Annotto Bay artist to an international level of recognition and stardom.

From the toasting of Dancehall through to the sweet melodies of Lovers Rock, it’s fair to say Hammond is perhaps one of the genre’s most diverse artists. So, in a world where tastes are becoming more eclectic and music ever more disposable, it comes as no surprise that his 2012 album, ‘One Love, One Life’, was nominated for a prestigious Grammy Award.

What’s more, 2013 saw him awarded the Order of Jamaica and, whilst a five track EP may not be comparable to such an accolade, it certainly makes an effort to showcase the very best of Beres Hammond.

So, blow up the balloons, put on your party hat, cut the cake and join us in celebrating Beres Hammond’s birthday as ‘Beres Hammond – Reggae Hot Shots’ is available to stream or download across all major platforms here
